The Forest City Hospital collection contains primary sources related to the history of Forest City Hospital, an institution founded by Black physician Show moreThe Forest City Hospital collection contains primary sources related to the history of Forest City Hospital, an institution founded by Black physicians in 1957 to serve Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood. During the 1950s, there was considerable debate regarding the need for a Black hospital within Cleveland’s African American community. Many, including local NAACP leadership, felt that creating a separate hospital would be counterproductive to the goal of fully integrated hospitals while others, most notably physicians, saw a need to create opportunities for Black clinicians to receive advanced training, obtain hospital privileges, and lead departments. Forest City Hospital served the Glenville community for 20 years, closing in 1978 due to the rapidly changing healthcare landscape and the financial difficulties. Show less
