Show moreThe Forest City Hospital Digital Collection contains digitized primary sources related to the history of Forest City Hospital, an institution founded primarily by Black physicians in 1957 to serve Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood. During the 1950s, there was considerable debate regarding the need for a Black hospital within Cleveland’s African American community. Many, including local NAACP leadership, felt that creating a separate hospital would be counterproductive to the goal of fully integrated hospitals while others, most notably physicians, saw a need to create opportunities for Black clinicians to receive advanced training, obtain hospital privileges, and lead departments. The founders of Forest City believed that the hospital could set a precedent of providing equal access to medical care and medical education regardless of race, religion, or creed. Forest City Hospital served the Glenville community for 21 years, closing in 1978 due to the rapidly changing healthcare landscape and financial difficulties.
