Year of Darwin and Evolution, 2008-2009

Native

Beginning in the Fall of 2008 and proceeding through the Spring semester, departments from across Case Western Reserve University will sponsor events and programs celebrating Charles Darwin's life, his work and the diverse ways in which evolutionary theory continues to influence research and thought in biology and other fields. Some of these events will be intended primarily for an academic audience and others will be intended for the general public. On a roughly monthly basis, prominent individuals who have contributed significantly either to the progress or the popularization of evolutionary science will be coming to Case to deliver lectures and participate in the celebration. Charles Darwin was born in 1809 (February 12, same day as Abraham Lincoln), making 2009 the 200th anniversary of his birth. In addition, 2009 is the 150th anniversary of the publication (November 24, 1859) of his enormously influential book, "On the Origin of Species". To recognize the 170th anniversary of Darwin's conceiving of natural selection (reportedly on September 28, 1838) the university is initiating the celebration at the start of the 2008-2009 academic year with the Convocation.
