Ernest J. Bohn (1901-1975) served as the first director of the Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) from 1933-1968. The CMHA, now the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority, is regarded as the first housing authority organized in the United States and Bohn is often referred to as "the father of public housing." This distinction is based not only on his work in Cleveland and in Ohio, but also on his prominence on the national scene, his lobbying efforts, especially for the 1937 Housing Act, and his involvement in every housing advocacy group of consequence. After his retirement, he served as a faculty member in the Department of Urban and Environmental Affairs at Case Western Reserve University. He died in Cleveland on December 15, 1975 and left his personal papers and his library to Case Western Reserve University, as a condition of his will. His generous gift included this collection of maps dealing primarily with housing and planning in Northeast Ohio.

Most of the letters here were written between Charles F. Brush, Sr., and his family members, most notably his son, Charles F. Brush, Jr., and his son’s wife, Dorothy Brush (Walmsley). Unfortunately, not much correspondence exists before 1910. In the letters (dated between 1911 and 1929) between Brush, Sr., his son, and daughter-in-law, they discuss their lives in Cleveland and elsewhere, their travels, scientific experiments, school, and grandchildren. The correspondence also documents how Dorothy and Brush, Sr., coped with the death of Charles F. Brush, Jr., in 1927. The correspondence files also highlight Brush’s efforts to prove his theory of gravitation. This theory suggested that the behavior of gravity could be explained by the action of ether. Ether was thought to be a gas which many believed occupied space in which light traveled. Thus, Brush attempted to prove the existence of ether. After many years of conducting his own experiments in his Euclid Avenue home’s basement laboratory to prove the existence of ether, Brush contracted scientists at the U.S. Bureau of Standards and General Electric to further his work. As the correspondence showed, the experiments done at the U.S. Bureau of Standards and General Electric could not prove, to their satisfaction, the existence of ether.

From the inception of the Medical Department of Western Reserve until 1885, each student had to submit a thesis to graduate. These theses, each handwritten in pen on paper, were later bound into a series of 47 volumes. Over time the thesis requirement lapsed and this collection found its way to the archives of the Dittrick Medical History Center in the Allen Memorial Medical Library. The theses collection comprises a unique view on the range and substance of medical students’ interests and preoccupations, and of course, what they were being taught during the two years they spent in medical school. Students typically wrote on diseases, presenting their etiology (their cause or origin), diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. So, for example, one finds theses on consumption (tuberculosis), “intermittent fevers,” and scarlet fever. Some theses ponder more weighty topics, such as the rational of medication, the nature of contagion, and the nature and effects of miasmas. More mundane surgical topics range from dealing with strabismus (cross eye) to hernia repair. And some these deal with essentials of anatomy and body function, as for example, a thesis on the physiology of the ovaries. Diagnosis looms large and included topics such as symptoms and signs of pregnancy and the role of auscultation and percussion in physical examination. Of course, the quality and coherence varies considerably, as did the aptitude and intellect of the students. One might look in vain for great originality; most pieces were a review of the literature on the thesis topic. But one cannot help but be impressed by students’ expository skill and generally high command of the English language. The theses may use correct (for the time) terminology, but in other respects are written in plain, clear, straightforward manner. Jargon is all but non-existent, so the theses are very accessible to all readers. In summary, the theses of Western Reserve medical students capture a moment in time, just on the eve when the biological sciences transformed medicine and made it less approachable.

Dr. George W. Crile (1864-1943), house surgeon at Lakeside Hospital and professor of surgery at the Medical School of Western Reserve University, was known internationally for his surgical techniques and medical research. During World War I, Dr. Crile organized a unit of doctors and nurses from Lakeside Hospital to assist the Allies in treating and caring for the war wounded. The Lakeside Unit spent the first three months of 1915 at the American Ambulance in Paris. During this period, Dr. Crile kept a personal account of his experience. Upon his return to Cleveland, Dr. Crile and his wife, Grace McBride Crile, organized these accounts, along with personal and professional correspondence and letters from soldiers he had treated, and compiled a three volume set of “diaries”. Copies of this set were given to members of the Lakeside Unit as a memento

An ETD is a document that explains the research or scholarship of a graduate student in an electronic format. It is simultaneously suitable for machine archives and worldwide retrieval. The ETD is similar to its paper predecessor. For example, it has figures, tables, footnotes, and references. It also has a title page with the author's name, the official name of the university, the degree sought, and the names of the committee members. Furthermore, it may describe why the work was done, how the research relates to previous work as recorded in the literature, the research methods used, the results, and the interpretation and discussion of the results, and a summary with conclusions. The ETD is different from its paper predecessor, however, in a few important aspects. First, it provides a technologically advanced medium for expressing your ideas. You may prepare an ETD by using nearly any word processor or document preparation system, and by incorporating relevant multimedia objects. Second, it is less expensive for you to prepare. By creating an ETD, you avoid the requirement of submitting multiple copies on special paper. Third, ETDs promote greater access to your research. ETDs are made available to anyone that browses the World Wide Web. They consume virtually no library shelf space, and never collect dust. Overall, ETDs contribute to worldwide graduate education and unlock the underutilized results of graduate research for the scholarly community. Compiled by OhioLINK. Documents made available through OhioLINK ETD Center as well as OCLC Digital Library.

During the 1930s, there was catastrophic unemployment in the country. A federal project was put in place in 1935, called "Work Projects Administration" which would utilize the skills of out-of-work employees helping them to earn a small wage to survive. Previous efforts had begun in 1933, to assist unemployed artists under the Public Works of Art Project established by the Treasury Department. The country was divided into sixteen regions, one of which was the Cleveland region. Two people were instrumental in the success of the Cleveland effort William M. Milliken, Director of the Cleveland Museum of Art and Linda A. Eastman, Director of the Cleveland Public Library. The significant benefit of their collaboration and leadership was a regional approach to art that exemplified and identified the "Cleveland Scene." In 1935, the Works Progress Administration, took over the support of artists on relief and hired hundreds of workers for the Federal Art Project in music, theater, writing and art, the Federal Art Project alone employed 350 Cleveland artists.

Materials from the Great Lakes Exposition of 1936 and 1937, including postcards, photographs, objects, video, panoramas, programs, and audio The GREAT LAKES EXPOSITION of 1936 and 1937 provided Clevelanders with relief from the dreariness of the Depression and helped them celebrate the centennial of Cleveland's incorporation as a city. The exposition was the idea of Frank J. Ryan and Lincoln G. Dickey, the city's first public hall commissioner. Mall A was the site of the Sherwin-Williams Plaza at the Great Lakes Exposition of 1937. Dudley S. Blossom became chairman of a civic committee that contributed $1.5 million to transform the idea into reality. Built on land extending along the lakefront from W. 3rd St. to about E. 20th St., the 135-acre exposition also incorporated the Mall area, Public Hall, and Municipal Stadium. Work began in Apr. 1936, and in just 80 days the exposition opened to the public on 27 June 1936 for a 100-day run. Among the attractions which drew 4 million visitors to the lakefront that year were a "Streets of the World" district that featured 200 cafes and bazaars reminiscent of the countries they represented, a midway with rides and sideshows, a Court of the Presidents, a Hall of Progress, an Automotive Bldg., an art gallery, a Marine Theater, and horticultural gardens. The 1937 season opened on 29 May with a new attraction which became its most popular feature: an Aquacade that featured water ballet shows and starred Eleanor Holm and Johnny Weismuller. By the time the second season came to an end on 15 Sept., nearly $70 million had been spent by approximately 7 million exposition visitors over the 2 years. The only vestiges of the festival remaining in 1995 were the Donald Gray Gardens directly north of the stadium. [source: Encyclopedia of Cleveland History]

Light, Space and Time- A Cleveland Festival 1987 commemorates not only the centenary of the Michelson-Morley experiment, but also the broad-ranging creativity of the men who performed it. Organized and coordinated by the Michelson-Morley Centennial Celebration (an Ohio non-profit corporation), the Festival has elicited the participation of thirteen of Cleveland's educational and cultural institutions in an extraordinary cooperative enterprise. (written by Dorothy Humel Hovorka). Modern Physics in America derives from the theme from the original Michelson-Morley experiments in the summer of 1887. The focus on the symposium is the progress and research during the hundred years which separate the experiments and date the symposium. This point in time during the summer of 1887 has been referred to as the beginning of modern physics. Most of the major areas of physics are reflected in the symposium, including many world-renowned scientists.

This collection contains copies of original 16mm films (positive prints) of the National Air Races as well as general aviation-related events taken during the period 1928-1939 which are held by held by the Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, Ohio. A substantial portion of the original footage was produced by Warren S. Weiant II of Newark, Ohio. Weiant operated Weiant Gardens, (a greenhouse vegetable business) and Weiant Aircraft Sales, both located in Newark. Weiant had a passionate interest in aviation which is reflected in the films he shot. In addition to footage shot by Weiant, the collection also includes film of the National Air Races produced by the Standard Oil Company of Ohio and the Ohio National Guard. Warren S. Weiant II’s son, Warren Swift Weiant III (1928 -2012) donated his father’s films to the Historical Society. These copies of his father’s films and other footage of the National Air Races have been prepared in his memory. The digital transfer of the film was done by the staff of the Kelvin Smith Library of Case Western Reserve University as part of a cooperative program with the Western Reserve Historical Society. The National Air Races began in 1920 and by the 1930s had become a major public event comprised of closed-course pylon races, most notably the Thompson Trophy Race, cross-country derbies, and a variety of aviation-related exhibitions, both flight and static. Cleveland first hosted the races in 1929. The city remained the primary locus for the event (with the exception of 1930, 1933, 1936 and the war years, 1940-1945) until 1949. The footage reproduced in this collection records notable figures of aviation during the 1920s and 1930s including Charles Lindberg, Amelia Earhart, James Doolittle, Roscoe Turner, Louise Thaden, Wiley Post, and Ernst Udet as well as aviation technology of the period including lighter-than-air craft, (US Navy blimps and rigid airships and the German Graf Zeppelin); notable production aircraft such as the Ford Trimotor, and the Lockheed Vega; racing aircraft including the Weddell-Williams, and the Travelair; and a variety of military aircraft including the Curtiss Hawk. The digitization of some of these films was done in memory of Warren Swift Weiant III (1928 -2012) who donated his father's aviation films to the Western Reserve Historical Society

The puppet plays are little booklets of play scripts, in manuscript, from the repertoires of German puppeteers in use during the 19th century. It is unusual that these scripts have survived considering the hard use they must have endured as the puppeteers toured throughout the country giving performances. The important fact of their survival is that scholars can examine these scripts and discover new information about the German theater during that period of time. The only other manuscript material contained in the collection was purchased for Scherer by H. Lubke during the latter's search for the Berlin versions of the Faust puppet play during the 1880's. These manuscripts formed the repertoire of the Berlin puppeteer Schlussel from whom Lubke purchased the texts. From both physical and internal evidence, however, it is evident that the manuscripts were originally the possession of the puppeteer Froloff. This would date them from the first decades of the nineteenth century and would make them the oldest organic collection of puppet manuscripts from the Mark Brandenburg. Except for a diplomatic edition of the Faust manuscript published by Lubke, none of these texts have either been edited or recorded (from Sander L. Gilman). These puppet plays as well as over 7500 volumes from Wilhelm Scherer's library are in the Department of Special Collections, University Library, Case Western Reserve University. The Wilhelm Scherer Collection was purchased in Berlin, Germany, in January, 1887, by Professor Arthur H. Palmer, then on the faculty of Western Reserve University. As a former student of Dr. Scherer, Palmer was well aware of the importance of his personal library. Professor Palmer raised funds from fellow Clevelanders and traveled to Berlin to purchase the 12,000 volumes from Scherer's widow after his untimely death at the age of 45.

The Robert M. Stecher Collection of Charles Darwin Books and Manuscripts is an outstanding resource for the study of Charles Darwin. It is an excellent example of what a knowledgeable and enthusiastic collector can do for scholarship. Over a period of thirty-seven years, Dr. Stecher collected both the works of Darwin and other 19th century naturalists and those writings that influenced Darwin's thought. Over 175 manuscript letters by Darwin, his family and his contemporaries (such as A.R Wallace, Grant Allen, Henry W. Bates, J. Brodie Innes and many others) are also an invaluable part of the collection. These letters document Darwin's daily life and reveal the struggle of the Victorians to formulate and accept the theory of evolution. The number in the title refers to the Calendar of the Darwin Correspondence numbering system.

The seminar, 'The Flora Stone Mather Oral History Project', took place in the fall semester of 2009, and offered a discussion-based exploration of the literature on the history of women’s education in America. It will also give students an opportunity to contribute to that literature by conducting interviews for the Flora Stone Mather Oral History Project. Flora Stone Mather College for Women (1888-1972), a coordinate college to Adelbert College for men at Western Reserve, University represented a singular experience in the history of education for women. As interviewers of Mather College alumnae, students will be instructed in the basic principles and skills of oral history, and engage in the creation of primary sources materials—tapes and transcriptions—essential for historical documentation. They will then apply these materials to two projects: a monograph on the history of the coordinate college, and a comparative study relating that history to the present-day educational experiences for women at Case Western Reserve University. Also included are a number of video productions written and produced by Gladys Haddad

In 2003 a Library Opportunity Grant was awarded to Kelvin Smith Library and the Weatherhead School of Management(WSOM) to digitize and make publicly available 100 years of the annual reports for U.S. Steel. Faculty in the WSOM have a continuing interest in business and accounting history. Of particular interest is the longitudinal/historical developments for various steel and auto and auto supply companies. U.S Steel Corporation is particularly important because it is the first billion dollar capitalized corporation to emerge in the United States. As such it serves as the prototype of what was going to happen in business during the 20th century. Having a full picture of the financial reporting over the 100 years will give not only business scholars but researchers in history, law, political science and other fields a valuable “window” into how the process developed and changed over time. The United States Steel Corporation was founded in 1901, at the time the largest business enterprise ever launched. U.S. Steel, as the company is better known, became the country's largest producer of steel. Businessmen J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, Charles Schwab and Elbert H. Gary all had dealings with the corporation at some point in the company's early history.
